Abstract

Drawing from phenomenological perspectives within cinema, particularly regarding the situated and embodied spectatorial experience, the article aims to explore the phenomenon of the subject’s “non-gaze”, activated through the closing of the eyelids. What is revealed with- in a subject when the mounting tension and suspense within an im- age, as seen in iconic sequences present in Hitchcock’s filmography, lead to the closing of the eyes? Through an investigation into the phenomenology of the unbearable and visually unsustainable, the article delves into the self-reflective moment of a subject in the midst of the suspension of the objective world.
