The aim of this contribution is to investigate the relationship between the gazes of Bergman’s Persona, through a possible Sartrean interpretation, as well as the relationship that these gazes weave with the cinema screen. It will be seen that this screen is both a device of visibility and a mate- rial barrier, referring to the separation between mother and child that lies at the centre of the film. What does the non-recognition of the two protagonists tell us about existence and the possibilities of cinematic representation?
