Abstract

The article studiesJoshua Oppenheimer’sdocumentaries – TheAct of Killing (2012)and The Look of Silence(2014) – combiningclose reading, film theoryand philosophy. Inparticular, the balancebetween performativityand spectatorshipdeveloped in Oppenheimer’sreenactmentswill be described, theninterpreted throughthe lens of Cavell’sconcept of soul-blindnessand, more generally,his use of Wittgenstein’sdiscussion ofappearance-vision andintersubjectivity.
