Abstract

Taking up Lacan’s conception of the gaze as an object, the article explores Jordan Peele’s Nope (2022), which posits animality as a blind spot in the cinematic visual field. It is an animality that cannot be seized, that remains enigmatic and undomesticated. The essay highlights how also the visual contains some- thing that cannot be looked at and, above all, captured by digital devices.
